Shooter Near San Diego Airport Stops Planes From Landing
Update: The gunman who partially shut down San Diego Airport is currently in police custody and has been identified as 33-year-old Titus Colbert. After a four-hour stand-off, authorities reportedly fired tear gas through the gunman’s apartment, leading the gunman to leave his home. No one was injured during the incident, and the FAA is now allowing flights to land in San Diego Airport.
On Wednesday, an active shooter near the San Diego International Airport prevented planes from landing. According the reports, the San Diego Police responded to a domestic violence call in the city's Little Italy neighborhood just after 9:00 a.m. local time, but the situation quickly escalated. While no injuries have been reported and outbound flights are still taking off, the shooter has firing a high-powered rifle sporadically from the complex. He is reportedly being contained in a one-bedroom apartment.
The San Diego Police Department is cautioning people to “Stay away from all windows until further notice and Shelter in place.” The building is located in the Banker's Hill neighborhood. According NBC San Diego, a woman told police she wasn't in her apartment when the suspect called her from inside the apartment. The gun fire started as soon as cops arrived.
Negotiation with the suspect is ongoing.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, SWAT teams are in the area and numerous streets in the immediate vicinity were shut down by around 10 a.m. local time.
At 12:53 p.m. Pacific, San Diego International Airport tweeted that it still wasn't accepting arrivals, but at 1 p.m. PT, Lt. Scott Wahl of the SDPD told NBC San Diego that it was safe for San Diego airport to begin allowing arrivals again.
The airport has issued no further updates.
