How To Use A Sex Egg To Strengthen Your Pelvic Floor Muscles

by Tessa Shull

A while back, thanks to Goop Goddess Gwyneth Paltrow, I discovered a very special kind of egg. It's not the kind you eat; instead, it's an egg for your vagina. As you can imagine, the idea has gotten a lot of feedback, both good and bad. For a lot of women, however, it seems like a new and interesting concept to help you stay toned down there, which can leave you wondering how to use a sex egg to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles.

The sex egg, also known as a love egg, jade egg or yoni egg, is used to strengthen the pelvic floor, according to Love Stone. To get into a little more of the alternative medicine side of things, the egg is also supposed to improve sex, chakra, sensuality, and your overall health. Additionally, Love Stone shared that the yoni egg was a longtime secret of royalty in China, with Chinese believing that if your pelvic floor muscles are weak, life force will escape, but using the egg to strengthen those muscles helps prevent that.

In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel, Paltrow explained that you insert the egg into your vagina and using your muscles to hold it in for an undisclosed period of time. (Some suggest keeping the egg in for an hour or two while others say they do it for an entire day.) She also shared that the egg acts as a weight, and many women who've become good at this practice say it helps with balancing hormones and "all kinds of amazing benefits." So basically, you use the egg by inserting it into your vagina and using .

The concept and period of time to leave the egg in your vagina has caused some controversy, however. In a post written by Dr. Jen Gunter, she expressed concern that leaving the egg in for an entire day could lead to an increased risk of bacterial vaginosis. Although Gunter, along with most other doctors, will admit that pelvic floor exercises help with incontinence and may strengthen orgasms, their concern stems from inserting an object into your vagina and keeping it there for longer, than say, you're supposed to keep in a tampon.

If you do decide to take advantage of a sex egg to try to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, it may be a good idea to start off just a few minutes at a time. Moving forward, you can keep the egg in as long as you feel comfortable, but if you're going for all day, it's best to reach out to your healthcare provider for their feedback first. Keep in mind, if your doctor doesn't know what it is or seems very close-minded on the matter, it's perfectly fine to seek out another opinion from a doctor who may have more experience and information on the practice.
