Here Are Safeway's Holiday Hours So You Can Plan Accordingly

by Caroline Shannon-Karasik

Sometimes it seems no matter how much holiday prep you do, there is that one thing — an ingredient to grandma's famous apple pie or everyday grocery items like eggs — that you forget, right? But these days, many grocery stores stay open on Christmas Day or at least have amended hours that allow you to pick up necessary last-minute items. But before you slip boots on over your pajama pants and run out the door, let's review the options you have available to you. Like, is Safeway open on Christmas? And can you count on your beloved Starbucks to whip you up a grande triple Caramel Macchiato? There may even be an option for having your food delivered to your door — swear.

But first — Safeway. Stores are often open on Christmas Eve with schedules varying by location, but most stores are closed on Christmas Day, according to HolidayShoppingHours.com. The site noted Safeway stores open between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. and close around 10 p.m. to 11:00 p.m at most locations. Some stores are even open 24 hours, but it's best to check out your location's specifics on the site or by calling ahead.

So, what's a gal to do if holiday party supplies or last-minute ingredients are needed? If you are simply in need of milk or even a carton of eggs, then you may want to check out your local CVS or Walgreens. Even if you need to pick up Tylenol for your kid's fever because holiday celebrations are all about germs, then you can bet on these two stores being open. Check your locations for specific hours.

And if it's coffee that you are in need of, then — as per usual — you can rely on the ever-loyal Starbucks red cup. Check your location for specific opening hours, but word on the street is that all stores will be open until 6 p.m.

There is, of course, always the wonder that is Amazon. In addition to offering a how-did-you-ever-live-without-it Prime membership, the company now has an extra Prime perk called Prime Now, which features same-day and two-hour delivery. Downside? It's only available in select areas, including Atlanta, Brooklyn, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Orange County, Miami, Minneapolis New York City, Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and Virginia Beach. You can search your zip code to see if your city is eligible. According to Amazon, the two-hour delivery is free and one-hour delivery is available in most areas for just $7.99. Bonus? The service is available seven days a week.

So how does that benefit you if you need food, right? Prime Now includes groceries, gifts, and goodies from your favorite local stores, which means you can snag last-minute food essentials. In Portland, that means snagging provisions from New Seasons Market, World Foods, Uwajimaya, and Cupcake Jones. If you are in New York City, then you can have favorites from Westside Market, Eataly, Gourmet Garage, Union Square Wine & Spirits, Vintage Grape Wine & Spirits, and Billy's Bakery delivered straight to your door. Prime Now also delivers from select restaurants in various cities.

Of course, you can also opt out of cooking — or ordering — on Christmas entirely, instead heading out for breakfast or dinner to one of the many family-friendly restaurants that are open on Christmas Day. Denny's, Waffle House, TGI Fridays, and even most Buca di Beppo locations are open on Christmas Day.

Because, truly, nothing says Christmas like a Grand Slam breakfast (two fluffy buttermilk pancakes, two sunny-side-up eggs, two bacon strips, and two sausage links) with a Starbucks Peppermint Mocha after, am I right?
