Lucas From 'The Bachelorette' Has An Odd Job Title

by Chrissy Bobic

No matter how many seasons I watch of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, the contestants and the careers of the contestants never cease to amaze and confuse me — like Season 12 Bachelorette contestant Daniel, whose job description was simply "Canadian." And now, Season 13’s Lucas, whose job is simply "Whaboom." But what does Lucas' "Whaboom" mean on The Bachelorette, you ask? That's a really good question with no clear answer.

Lucas from The Bachelorette this season has a confusing job title and seems like he has the kind of personality that makes him all about getting attention, bad or good. Which is par for the course when you’re dealing with reality TV show contestants. But even so, he sounds like he’s going to be a handful the likes of which Rachel will have to give plenty of polite smiles and laughs too, all the while wondering how the heck she got stuck with him on her season of The Bachelorette.

In the Facebook Live announcement last week that introduced all of the Season 13 Bachelorette contestants, Chris Harrison described Lucas as someone that fans will either love to hate, just hate, or possible love. Sounds like a real keeper, right? And although it’s still not super clear what a "Whaboom" is or what it means, according to Harrison, it has a number of meanings, in a way.

"It's a lifestyle. It's an essence. It's who he is," Harrison said in the Facebook Live video. "It's a noun, it's a verb, it's an adverb. You can be Whaboom, you can be Whaboomed, and you can Whaboom. You can call somebody a Whaboom." Still confused? Yeah, me too.

My guess is that "Whaboom" is Lucas’ attempt at creating a new catchphrase or just a phrase that catches on long enough to give him 15 minutes of Instagram fame when his time on The Bachelorette ends. Because even "Whaboom" aside, I can’t take this guy seriously.

According to Lucas’ Bachelorette profile, he’s definitely going to be one of the quirky ones this season. Under his least favorite things to do on a date, one of his answers was "going to a funeral" and for his ideal mate’s appearance, he named all female cartoon characters, so yeah. Like Harrison said, he’s going to be a contestant to either love, hate, or love to hate.

But as far as the actual meaning of "Whaboom" on The Bachelorette, it’s probably going to be something Lucas busts out during the season premiere in order to set himself apart from the rest of the other 30 men and to somehow gain Rachel’s attention. But if I’m being totally honest here, it’s probably not going to be the right kind of attention.
